Problem

The real difficulty wasn't the paperwork. It was that disabilities rarely exist in isolation. One injury could lead to a prescription, which caused a side effect, which caused another condition, and so on. Untangling that chain to land on an accurate disability rating required a medical/legal process most veterans couldn't navigate alone. The questionnaire needed to surface those chains itself.

Process

Ran surveys and interviews with veterans, built personas and a user journey map, then used card sorting to structure the information architecture before moving into low- and medium-fidelity wireframes and a visual system.

Key Decision

The Smart Questionnaire used AI to associate reported symptoms with related disabilities, surfacing secondary/chained conditions a veteran wouldn't know to report themselves, so the final claim reflected the highest accurate rating rather than just what was explicitly asked.

Solution

Smart Questionnaire plus auto-generated final report of potential ratings, downloadable as a PDF. Accessible (WCAG 2.1 AA) throughout.
